About Dan

Recording ambisonic oceanscape, Vancouver Island, B.C. Canada

At age 7, Dan taught himself Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on the piano by ear - though his hands couldn't quite reach the left hand octaves! Early in his teens he found his main instrument, the guitar, followed by keyboards, bass and drums. Dan went on to perform countless gigs, eventually finding his way into music for film and television. While in university, where he purposely expanded his thinking beyond music, Dan continued to develop his skills on many projects in the independent music scene, from performing, to session work and record production. Eventually he became almost exclusively immersed in music for picture, only pausing to produce the occasional record, create sound design for theatrical productions, or to join friends' bands live on stage.

Dan has had the good fortune of working on a wide variety of projects with many gifted collaborators. These rich experiences shape his distinctive style as he continues to evolve his craft, with a particular focus on combining traditional score elements with new and experimental methods.

"...whatever the context, story is everything, and whether the score's role is to invisibly support the narrative, or - if called upon - to push it forward aggressively, ultimately sound and picture should fuse into one seamless whole..."

From his ongoing studio and recording projects, to his original scores for the innovative award winning films of directors, Wayne Wapeemukwa (Luk'Luk'L, Manhunt), Ying Wang (The World Is Bright,The Border),Sheona McDonald (Dead Man's Switch- A Crypto Mystery), Dan brings valuable experience and a unique creative palette to every project.
